S.T.E.A.M. Adventure: Grades 4–6

Week 3: June 29 – July 3 | 9 AM – 2 PM

The Middle Ages: The Ballistic Breach

The Crisis: The castle walls are fortified, but the physics of defense have been forgotten! To protect the realm, we must master the science of projectile motion and structural resilience before the timeline is over-run.

The Fix:

  • Science & Engineering: Analyze potential and kinetic energy by engineering full-scale (tabletop) Trebuchets with adjustable counterweights. Study torsion physics by building catapults to calculate how tension affects distance and velocity.

  • Art: Explore Illuminated Manuscript chemistry by creating gold-leaf "gilding" and mixing egg-tempera paints. Study Gothic Architecture by designing "flying buttresses" to understand how external supports allow for massive stained-glass windows without collapsing the walls.

  • Math & Literacy: Master parabolic curves by graphing the flight path of projectiles. Write "Strategic Treatises" detailing the physics of a siege and the mathematical probability of a successful defense.

Mission Goal: Conquer the laws of ballistics and structural engineering to ensure the kingdom's survival!
